Derbyshire Falcons v Hampshire Royals at Derby on 26th August: YB40 League: Group B
By John Brown
Derbyshire played their last match in this competition against last year’s winners on a warm, sunny day. Hampshire won the toss and decided to bat against an unchanged Derbyshire team.
They got off to the expected brisk start and, after the compulsory first eight overs of Powerplay, Hampshire had reached 57 for the loss of only one wicket.
They continued to make good progress although a couple of very tidy overs from Ali Evans and the spin of David Wainwright, and later Tom Knight, gradually reduced the run-rate. With five overs remaining Derbyshire had restricted the visitors to a very creditable 167 for five. Hampshire took their second Powerplay and Dawson and Mascarenhas hit boldly and added a further fifty-two runs before they closed on 219 for seven.
Although Derbyshire lost Durston at the end of the sixth over, Chesney Hughes and Paul Borrington played very well in adding sixty runs from just over ten overs. Billy Godleman joined Hughes and the runs kept coming at the desired rate. It now seemed only a matter of time before Derbyshire reached their target, but Hampshire introduced the very slow occasional spin of Carberry and the batsmen did not deal as well with this or the left-arm spin of Dawson at the other end as well as they and their supporters would have liked.
Hughes fell to a smart return catch after he had played what seemed to be a match-winning innings of 74 (5 fours, 2 sixes) from eighty balls. He was followed by a succession of quick wickets, five more falling in only seven overs while twenty-three runs were added. Wainwright and Knight added 32 for the ninth wicket in five overs, and showed some of their earlier team-mates what might have been achieved with only a little more self-belief and more sensible batting.
When the last wicket fell there were still just over four overs remaining, but Hampshire had won a game by 41 runs which they should probably have lost, thus ensuring leadership of this group and guaranteeing themselves a semi-final spot.
Hampshire 219 for 7 (40 overs) (JHK Adams 64, JM Vince 40, AD Mascarenhas 24, MA Carberry 20; DJ Wainwright 2 for 33, AL Hughes 2 for 33, AC Evans 2 for 38)
Derbyshire 178 (35.5 overs) (CF Hughes 74, PM Borrington 25, DJ Wainwright 23; CP Wood 3 for 23, MA Carberry 3 for 37, LA Dawson 2 for 29)
Hampshire (2 points) beat Derbyshire by 41 runs
