By Trevor Cottam
After finishing second in the 2nd XI Championship North table, Derbyshire Second XI secure a 238-run victory against Leicestershire in a four-day friendly at the County Ground.
Derbyshire won the toss and chose to bat first on a Pitch that had been used before and would assist the bowlers in the later stages of the Game.
Despite useful contributions by Billy Godleman (40), Scott Elstone (39) and Wes Durston (33), the score stood at 155-6 and Derbys looked as though they would not achieve a competitive total. However, at this point Tom Knight came in to bat and hit his best score of the season with an excellent innings of 78, as the hosts posted 277 in their first innings.
The Leicestershire first innings rested on their opener Robson who made 115 out of a total of 265, giving Derbyshire a lead of 12 runs.
For Derbyshire all 10 wickets were taken by the Seam Bowlers (Jonathan Marsden 5-29, Alasdair Evans 3-65, and Ben Cotton 2-65).
With over two days to play, Derbyshire closed the second day at 59-1 from 16 overs, with Luke Thomas making his debut on 34 not out. On the third day, Thomas did not add to his overnight score, but runs came from most of the remaining batsmen. Godleman (114) complied an excellent century, Greg Cork made his highest second XI score of 77, Durston struck an aggressive 70, while Knight - confirming his emergence as an all rounder - with a quick-fire 35.
The final declaration of 404-8 left Leicestershire a victory target of 417 off 110 Overs.
At the close of play on the third day, Leicestershire had moved to 35 without loss and required a further 382 to win.
On the last day after Robson (48) and Ali (50) had been dismissed, the remainder of the Leicestershire batsmen were dismissed cheaply with all the Derbyshire bowlers enjoying some success. Knight was the pick of the bowlers, completing a five-wicket haul to return figures of 5-60 off 16 Overs.
