Essex Eagles v Derbyshire Falcons at Colchester on 25th August: Yorkshire Bank 40: Group B
With their main concern now resting on the Championship programme, Derbyshire rested several of their leading players for this 40-over match.
Following very heavy rain on the previous day, the sun shone at Colchester and captain Wes Durston invited Essex to bat first. Tony Palladino led the attack and bowled his eight overs straight through for an economical 27 runs.
When he had finished his spell after sixteen overs Essex had reached 66 for two, and Derbyshire had every reason to feel satisfied with their efforts thus far. Gradually, however, the lack of experience amongst the more junior Derbyshire bowlers became evident and the strong Essex hitters were able to take advantage during the last six overs when they added 78 runs to take the final total to a daunting 259. Ravi Bopara top-scored for Essex as he hit a dominant 88 (87 balls with 6 fours and 3 sixes).
If Derbyshire were to challenge this target, they would need a good start, but both openers fell during the first four overs. Billy Godleman played what was probably his best innings of the season so far, but he lost three partners before the end of the thirteenth over. Alex Hughes joined Godleman and they doubled the score from 52 for five, but by now any realistic chance of overtaking the Essex score had gone.
David Wainwright also played a useful innings in helping to add another 37, but the innings folded almost as soon as Derbyshire took their batting Powerplay with the last three wickets falling in six balls. Godleman had batted for 74 balls in compiling his encouragingly responsible sixty.
All things considered it was not surprising that Derbyshire fell short by more than one hundred runs. They now have one final game in this competition, against Hampshire at Derby on Bank Holiday Monday (1.45pm start).
