2nd XI One-Day Trophy - Worcestershire v Derbyshire, May 13th 2013
Derbyshire Second XI were narrowly defeated by Worcestershire by two wickets in their opening one-day trophy fixture of the season at Kidderminster.
Ben Slater top scored with 64 as the visitors posted 244 from their 40 overs, but the hosts reached their target with two overs to spare thanks to 106 from Aneesh Kapil in an entertaining day’s cricket.
After a solid start between Billy Godleman (20) and Paul Borrington (11), Derbyshire lost a flurry of wickets to be reduced to 50-3 after 12 overs.
But an excellent 98-run stand between Tom Poynton (41) and Slater helped shift the initiative back in favour of the visitors moving the scores onto 148-4 in the 26th over.
Slater continued his excellent innings and completed his half-century shortly after before he finally fell for 64, which included six fours, to top score for Stephen Stubbings’ side.
The visitors continued to pile on the runs in the final overs thanks to 39 from 22 balls from Peter Burgoyne and 33 from 29 balls courtesy of Alex Hughes, as Derbyshire closed their innings on 244-8.
And the Second XI made a superb start with the ball after the interval claiming three early wickets to reduce Worcestershire to 21-3 after 10 overs, as Ross Whiteley, Matt Higginbottom and Harding all claimed a wicket apiece.
But the impressive Kapil would share healthy partnerships with Joe Leach (44) and Matthew Pardoe (36) worth 86 and 74 runs respectively, moving the hosts onto 181-5 in 32 overs.
Worcestershire wstill requiring 63 runs from the final eight overs, but Kapil, who was finally dismissed for 106 from just 95 balls, ensured that the hosts would reach their target despite the best efforts of the Derbyshire bowlers.
Matt Higginbottom finished with the visitors’ best figures of 3-41 and Whiteley ended with 2-51, but it wasn’t enough as Worcestershire claimed victory with just 12 balls remaining.
