2nd XI Match Report: Derbyshire v MCC Young Cricketer's

Second XI Championship - Derbyshire v MCC Young Cricketer's, August 7th, 8th, 9th 2013; Belper Cricket Club

Derbyshire Seconds remain in top spot in the Second XI Championship North table after securing a convincing victory over MCC Young Cricketer’s at Belper Cricket Club.

Four-wickets apiece from Mark Turner and Alasdair Evans - and an excellent 97 from Wes Durston - set up a comfortable eight wicket win for Stephen Stubbings’ side who claimed their fourth successive Championship victory.

Derbyshire won the toss and elected to bowl first on a surface the offered some considerable help for the seamers. The MCC struggled throughout their first innings and lost regular wickets to be dismissed for 112.

Turner was the pick of the bowlers, bowling with good pace and accuracy, the paceman returned figures of 4-41 in 15 overs, while Evans (2-24) and David Wainwright (2-7) both chipped in with two wickets apiece.

Derbyshire also struggled to combat the testing conditions in their first innings, losing their first four wickets with just 66 runs on the board. However, an excellent 101-run partnership between Durston and Scott Elstone left the hosts in a strong position on 167-4 at the close on Day One.

On the next Morning, the pitch was again helpful to the bowlers due to early morning dew. Durston and Elstone (29) could only add nine more runs before Durston finally fell just three runs short of a well-deserved century.

Some lusty hitting down the order from Turner (32), and useful contributions from Tom Knight (21) and Wainwright (20) helped Derbyshire post 275 in their first innings, securing a 163-run lead.

The MCC still had 56 overs to navigate on Day Two, but the pace attack of Turner (1-38) and Evans (4-80) quickly tore through the visitors top order leaving them in trouble on 169-6, leading by just six runs.

Jonathan Marsden (3-25) claimed three early wickets on the final morning to help dismiss the MCC Young Cricketer’s for just 234, an overall lead of 71 runs.

And it didn’t take long for the hosts to achieve an excellent victory shortly after the Lunch interval, with Durston (22 not out) and Captain Paul Borrington (30 not out) leading the way as they reached their 72-run target for the loss of just two wickets.

Derbyshire gained 23 points to maintain their position at the top of the Second XI Championship North table.
