Trent Bridge win keeps Falcons in the hunt

Wes DurstonA brutal Wes Durston half-century set Derbyshire on their way to a crucial Friends Life t20 victory over Nottinghamshire.

Durston scored 50 not out, off just 31 balls, as the Falcons posted 109-1 from their shortened innings of nine overs at Trent Bridge – with Chesney Hughes also on fire making 47 off 25 deliveries in a fine opening stand of 98 off 7.5 overs.

Peter Burgoyne then starred with exceptional figures of 1 for 13 from 2 overs as the Outlaws finished 16 runs short of Derbyshire’s imposing total, despite a remarkable 43 off just 15 balls from Michael Lumb.

Tim Groenewald took the crucial wickets of Alex Hales - clean bowled for a golden duck - and Samit Patel without scoring, while Alex Hughes took two wickets for four runs from his solitary over. Mark Turner took a trio of excellent catches, including a special pluck – diving full length – to gain the crucial wicket of Lumb at 44-3 after 3.2 overs, as Derbyshire defied the absence of Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Albie Morkel through injury to record an against the odds victory.

Derbyshire Captain Wayne Madsen said: “It was do-or-die for us against a strong Nottinghamshire team.

“Wes and Chesney led the way up-front. They came out firing and got us to a good enough total to win the game

“We won the first three games at the start of the competition. Hopefully we can win the last three and qualify. We’ve now got to continue playing well and be on top of our game against Leicestershire and Durham this weekend.”

Man of the match Durston added: “That was excellent fun! Twenty20 is always exciting, Chesney and I got us off to a great start, I really enjoyed batting with him and I really enjoyed the result.

“We got off to a great start in the competition with three wins, only for things not to go our way during the last week and a half.

“But, tonight, we have turned over Nottinghamshire – at Trent Bridge – and we’re delighted.”
