Wayne Madsen proud to be first to 1,000 Championship runs

WayneMadsenWayne Madsen spoke of his joy after reaching 1,000 LV= County Championship Division One runs for the season against Middlesex on Tuesday.

Madsen struck his third century of the campaign, during which he became the first man to reach 1,000 Championship runs in 2013.

The 29-year-old is currently the leading run scorer in Division One with 1056 runs and Madsen, speaking exclusively for the Cricket Derbyshire E-Newsletter, spoke of his pride.

“I’m over the moon,” Madsen said. “It has been a great season personally for me and to get over the line here at Derby was a fantastic feeling. I'm very proud to be the first one to get past 1,000 runs.

“I feel like I have been batting very well this season, if not the best of my career. This is the first time I have passed 1,000 first class runs in a season, but I don’t want to stop here and I want to continue to score more runs.

“There was plenty of talk in the dressing room ahead of the fixture and I knew how many runs I needed to get.

“I knew that Sam Robson, who plays for Middlesex, was just seven runs short of 1,000 runs so it was nice to get the chance to bat first, which we would have done if we won the toss.

“To then go out there and bat as I did to pass 1,000 runs and to go on to get the century was a magnificent feeling. I’m extremely proud to achieve the feat and to help my side on a good day for us.

“Over the last couple of seasons my batting has really come along and I owe a lot to our batting coach, Dave Houghton, for guiding me through and sort of developing it. He has a lot to do with the way I play and the discipline when it comes to an innings. Obviously I am grateful for what he has done.

“I will continue to kick on and I now have a new goal to aim for. I will push on and try to score as many runs as I can and hopefully get up to the 1,400 mark. That would be quite nice and if I can get up there it would be great.

“I now have the opportunity to kick on and be the leading scorer and I would love to do that.”
