Captain Wayne Madsen says it’s an exciting time for the Club as the players begin their first week under new Elite Cricket Performance Director Graeme Welch.
Welch was installed as the head of Derbyshire’s new Elite Cricket Performance structure last week and returns to the Club where he was capped as a player in 2001, appointed Captain in 2006 and bestowed a benefit year in 2007.
Madsen has been delighted with the impact Welch has already made on the squad as preparations for the 2014 campaign begin to intensify.
“He [Graeme Welch] is a fantastic coach and well driven,” Madsen said. “I believe we’ve found the best candidate for the position and it’s certainly an exciting time for the squad and everyone connected to the Club.
“It’s a great opportunity for Graeme to oversee and take the Club forward, but his coaching abilities and knowledge will also be vital as he’s an exceptional coach.
“I know he will still have a big influence, especially on the bowling side, as well as his all-round coaching on a day-to-day basis.
“We’ve been able to sit down and have a few chats and the values and principles which he wants to get across to the team are fantastic.
“Now over the next few weeks we’ll sit down as a team, work out what our core values are and what we want to achieve over the next few seasons. We’ll also, from a training side, work out how we are going to get there.”
Madsen insists the squad is buzzing as they begin their first full-week's training under new Elite Cricket Performance Director Welch.
“This week we start with a bang,” Madsen added. “All the lads are in at 7am this week making sure we’re all working hard towards our goals.
“We’ve got fielding sessions first thing for an hour every morning to get us started. We’re then sitting down having breakfast as a squad giving us the opportunity to have discussions and find more out about individuals. Then we have our skills and strength and conditioning based coaching throughout the remainder of the day.
“It’s a great opportunity for us to kick pre-season off with a bang and that’s what we’re looking to do.
“This is just the start. We’re hoping our training and the ethos we are trying to install will snowball as we go towards the season. From a training point of view, the quality and quantity has to be measured together and we have to make sure we get that right as a team.
“It’s also fantastic to have all the lads here. Tim [Groenewald] flies back from South Africa today and he’ll be back in training on Wednesday morning, so we’ll have everyone here except Shiv [Chanderpaul].
“The boys are buzzing, as per usual, and I think there is a bit more excitement now with the guys trying to impress the new Elite Cricket Performance Director.
“The guys will be hoping to impress not only amongst the squad but also for the start of the season. We all know that if we want a successful season we need to work hard right now and our preparation has to be spot on.”
