Derbyshire Captain Wayne Madsen is getting behind a project to help children in Derby learn how to live a first-class healthy lifestyle and reduce their risk of heart disease.
The Heart of Cricket project, funded by a Healthy Heart grant from national charity Heart Research UK and sandwich franchise SUBWAY® stores, will be delivered by the Cricket Derbyshire Foundation, and is being championed by batsman Madsen.
The project, which starts in March, will reach 20 primary schools, over four weeks, in the most deprived areas of Derby, and will use cricketers as role models to demonstrate how a healthy heart is the result of important lifestyle choices. The sessions will also discuss how professional cricketers train and eat before matches.
The programme will show how diet choices and being active contribute to having a healthy heart. It will be delivered through a mix of classroom-based activity, cricket-based coaching and kwik cricket sessions. It will culminate in a match-day at the County Ground for each of the 20 schools, where they will take part in a cricket demonstration during the interval.
According to Derby City Council’s Health and Wellbeing strategy, life expectancy is 12.6 years lower for men and nine years for women in the most deprived areas of the city compared to the least deprived. Over 70% of men in Derby don’t meet the recommendations of 30 minutes of moderate intensity activity five times a week.
Heart of Cricket will reach 1,200 children and help them recognise that bad lifestyle choices can result in heart disease, and to get youngsters across the city to improve their diets and get more active. It is hoped that they will pass on their healthy-living learning to other members of their family and community.
Heart Research UK National Director, Barbara Harpham, said: “Wayne is a great sportsman and role model for youngsters. We’re sure his enthusiasm will drive this project and give them encouragement to really get involved. Together we can help them live healthier, happier and longer lives.”
Manaaz Akhtar, Regional Marketing Director for the SUBWAY® brand in the UK and Ireland, says: “The SUBWAY® brand is delighted to be able to fund this project with the Cricket Derbyshire Foundation. Thanks to the fundraising efforts of our staff and customers in the Central region, we have managed to support a unique community project which will help to promote heart health.”
Wayne Madsen, Derbyshire County Cricket Club Captain said: “It’s great to be involved in this unique community project to promote healthy living in Derby. Everyone at Cricket Derbyshire is very grateful to Heart Research UK and SUBWAY® stores for their support of our Foundation.”
