Derbyshire make winning start to pre-season tour

AbuDhabiDerbyshire made a winning start to their pre-season tour of Abu Dhabi, defeating Worcestershire by 126 runs in a 50-over contest.

Wes Durston top-scored with an excellent 94 off 74 balls, while Stephen Moore - making his first outing for the Club - added 74 off 78 balls as Derbyshire posted 342-8 off their 50 overs.

Graeme Welch’s men then claimed regular wickets with the ball, with Mark Footitt the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3 for 51 off eight overs, as Worcestershire were all out for 216 in 42 overs.

Derbyshire started positively after winning the toss at the Zayed Stadium.

Chesney Hughes and Moore shared a 57-run opening stand with both men enjoying success particularly through the off-side.

After the wicket of Chesney Hughes (27), Moore found another reliably partner in the shape of Durston and together they quickly moved Derbyshire into a strong position.

Moore struck seven fours in his entertaining innings helping to move Derbyshire onto 198-2 after 33 overs. It was an excellent start for the new Derbyshire recruit.

It was, however, Durston who stole the show top-scoring with 94 – which included three sixes and nine fours - to push Derbyshire past 281 with eight overs still remaining.

Billy Godleman, batting at number four, was the next person to get in on the act as he struck 47 runs off 40 balls – including three sixes – to ensure Derbyshire ended on an imposing total, despite the loss of late wickets.

Chasing 343 to win, Worcestershire struggled during the opening stages falling to 32-3 inside seven overs.

Tim Groenewald (2-49) picked up two early wickets in his opening burst, removing Kohler-Cadmore (6) and Alex Kervezee (8).

Footitt then claimed his first of three wickets, dismissing Daryl Mitchell for five after he feathered one down the leg side and Tom Poynton made no mistake behind the stumps.

Ross Whiteley (55) and Tom Fell (53), however, regrouped to add 136 runs in 21 overs to move Worcestershire onto 138-4 in the 28th over.

But the pair were both dismissed in quick succession; Fell thanks to some superb fielding from Moore and Whiteley falling to Wainwright (2-45).

The remaining wickets fell at regular intervals to Jonathan Clare (2-30), Footitt and Wainwright to seal a comfortable 126-run win for Captain Madsen and his side.
