VIDEO | Durston pleased with winning start

WesDurstonWes Durston spoke to derbyshireccc.com after Derbyshire’s 126-run victory against Worcestershire in Abu Dhabi yesterday.

Durston top-scored with an excellent 94 off 74 balls as Graeme Welch’s men claimed a comfortable victory in the county’s opening match of the tour.

Derbyshire posted 342-8 off their 50 overs, with Stephen Moore - making his first outing for the Club - adding 74 off 78 balls and Billy Godleman chipping in with 47 off 40 balls.

Wayne Madsen’s side men then claimed regular wickets with the ball, with Mark Footitt the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3 for 51 off eight overs, as Worcestershire were all out for 216 in 42 overs.

“To post 342 was a really good effort and we backed it up in the field,” Durston said. “We’ve very happy with the way we played.

“We made good use of the wicket first up. The idea was to maximise the fielding restrictions in the first 10 overs and Stephen Moore has got a proven record doing that.

“He went up top with Chesney and left me at three which seemed to work quite well. I picked up my pace before Stephen and I put on a really nice partnership.

“I got off to a reasonable start playing around Stephen. Then I found my stride once I made 30 or so and then I went through the gears. I was really happy with how I batted.

“We then backed this up with a good bowling display.  We got them three down early with some good bowling up front from Timmy [Groenewald] and Mark Footitt.

“Even though they had the partnership in the middle, they were always chasing our score and that played into our hands and we managed to pick up wickets at key times.

“It was an excellent win and now we look forward to facing Worcestershire again on Tuesday (6.30am start UK time) for a Twenty20 contest.”

With the addition of new recruit Moore at the top of the order, Durston moved to number three for yesterday’s pre-season fixture - a position he says suits him.

“I like to open and I feel like I can open and use the powerplay, but maybe I am more suitable to batting at number three.

“I’m happy at three, but really I am just happy to be playing and enjoying my cricket. This is day one of a long season and hopefully we can have many more days like this.”
