Wes Durston and Billy Godleman both made comebacks from injury for the Second XI today, but a strong Glamorgan side claimed a seven-wicket win in the One-Day Trophy fixture at Cardiff Cricket Club.
Wicketkeeper Richard Johnson also made his return after spending time away from the game to focus on recovering from sports performance anxiety issues which caused him to miss the last six weeks of the season.
After winning the toss and electing to bat first, Ben Slater top scored for John Sadler’s side, hitting 73 off 104 balls, including eight fours. Tom Knight added 45 off 66 balls (4 fours, 2 sixes) and Durston, on his return after missing last week’s NatWest T20 Blast clash with Nottinghamshire, struck 39 off just 38 balls (9 fours).
Matt Higginbottom (26 off 16 balls) and Ben Cotton (29 off 25 balls) added some valuable runs at the death, before Derbyshire were dismissed for 281 with nine balls remaining.
In reply, Mark Turner (3-50 off nine overs) claimed two wickets, both caught behind the wicket by Johnson, but an extraordinary 221-run stand between first team regulars Gareth Rees (111 not out) and Stewart Walters (105) guided the hosts to the victory target with 2.5 overs remaining with seven wickets remaining.
Glamorgan’s overseas signing Darren Sammy completed the victory smashing 32 off just 11 balls (3 fours, 3 sixes).
