Fresh from signing his first professional contract, Harvey Hosein top scored with 72 for Derbyshire Second XI, but Warwickshire came out on top in the Second XI Trophy match at The 3aaa County Ground.
After a long spell on the sidelines, Jonathan Clare made a welcome return to the squad for the matches versus Warwickshire this week and his fitness will be continue to be reviewed by medical staff.
Warwickshire seconds won the toss and decided to bat first, and managed to score 299-5 from their 50 overs, with Jonathan Webb scoring 68 and Sam Hain finishing unbeaten on 128.
In reply, Derbyshire fell 44 runs short, despite the impressive knock from wicket-keeper batsman Hosein.
Derbyshire bowlers Will Davis (1-61), Matt Higginbottom (1-35) and Jonathan Marsden (1-74) took a Warwickshire wicket each, the first of which was the danger man Webb, bowled by Davis for 68. The final wicket to fall was Burton, caught by the returning Clare off Marsden for 14, as Warwickshire ended on 299-5 from 50 overs.
The top three for Derbyshire all got starts, but Aaron West (18), Chesney Hughes (20) and Tom Wood (34) fell to leave the hosts on 102-3.
Top-scorer Hosein (72) built partnerships with Callum Brodwick (24) and George Sellars (20), but lost his own wicket when Richard Jones took his third wicket for the visitors. Derbyshire seconds were eventually bowled out 255 after 47 overs, a deficit of 44 from Warwickshire.
The two sides meet again on Tuesday 12 August until Thursday 14 August in the Second XI Championship at The 3aaa County Ground – entry is FREE.
