England all-rounder Ben Stokes put an end to Derbyshire’s hopes of victory in the Friends Life t20 match versus Durham at Chesterfield.
The Falcons had begun impressively in their defence of 136-7 and had the Dynamos firmly on the rack at 36-4 after 7.1 overs.
Stokes, however, launched an explosive counter-offensive of 46 off 24 balls and – in a partnership of 77 with Gordon Muchall (37 off 27) – led the visitors to the brink of a four wicket victory with eight balls to spare.
Chesney Hughes (32 off 37), Wayne Madsen (32 off 23) and Albie Morkel (25 off 18) had earlier threatened to fire Derbyshire to a more competitive score, but none were able to cash in on their starts in the face of an accomplished bowling performance from the visitors.
Derbyshire’s bowlers started equally impressively, but the power of Stokes, who struck five sixes, was more than they could live with.
