Godleman hits half-century on Day Three

Billy Godleman struck his second half-century of the season on battling Day Three for Derbyshire at Emerald Headingley. 

Yorkshire declared on 400-6, after Dawid Malan (219) completed his double-century, although there were morning wickets for the spinning pair of Matt Critchley and Leus du Plooy.

Godleman’s watchful innings included ten fours, as he steadied the Derbyshire ship after the quick wickets of Tom Wood (26) and Wayne Madsen (0) after lunch, but his side ended the day 198-6, with Critchley (31 not out) and Dal (15 not out) to resume on the final morning.

After reaching 150 in the solitary over bowled on Day Two, Malan made up for lost time on the third morning, as he struck a number of fours and sixes, after Critchley had dismissed Jonny Tattersall (64), bringing an end to a 200-run partnership.

Jordan Thompson (36 not out) added 89 with Malan, who brought up his double-century in 240 balls, including 27 fours and two sixes, before being caught on the boundary by Ben Aitchison off du Plooy.

George Hill, on his first-class debut for Yorkshire, made an unbeaten four before the hosts declared on 400-6, meaning that they secured maximum batting points, while Derbyshire managed two bowling points.

On his return to Derbyshire’s first-class batting line-up, Wood opened with Godleman, and he looked in good touch after a few testing early deliveries from Duanne Olivier, cracking the South African bowler through mid-wicket for four.

The opening 58-run stand was broken when Wood (26) was caught and bowled by Thompson, while Wayne Madsen (0) was trapped lbw by Steven Patterson.

Joined by du Plooy, the Derbyshire captain continued his watchful innings, going in at tea unbeaten on 48 and looking comfortable at the crease.

Shortly after the interval, he reached his half-century in 116 balls, including ten fours, but du Plooy was caught for 30 by Kohler-Cadmore off Patterson, before the skipper himself was dismissed for 54 by the same bowler.

After that 68-run partnership was brought to a close, Alex Hughes and Critchley looked to stabilise the innings, but the former would only manage 13 before he was caught by Olivier off Dom Leech.

Harvey Hosein (7) also fell before the close of play, which arrived three overs early due to bad light, with Derbyshire to 198-6, trailing by 202 and three away from avoiding the follow-on.
