Critchley named Player of the Year

All-rounder, Matt Critchley has been named Derbyshire’s Player of the Year for the 2020 campaign.

The 24-year-old, who recently signed a new two-year extension with the club, enjoyed an impressive red-ball season in the Bob Willis Trophy, while he was also a consistent performer in the Vitality Blast.

The leg-spinner claimed 17 first-class wickets, the most of any bowler in the North Group, at an average of 26.88, including career-best figures of 6-73 in a dominant victory over Leicestershire.

Critchley also provided a crucial anchor to Derbyshire’s batting order, playing a key role in a number of innings on his way to 234 runs at an average of 39.00, including one half-century, as the side finished second in the group with the joint-highest points tally of any Division Two side.

With the white ball, he topped the Falcons’ wickets column in the Vitality Blast with four dismissals, while the Cricket Derbyshire Academy, in partnership with the University of Derby, graduate also hit 154 runs at an average of 19.25.

Head of Cricket, Dave Houghton said: “I don’t think there was much doubt in anybody’s mind when we decided who the award would go to. Matt’s had a fantastic season, he’s topped our bowling in both competitions and he’s added some unbelievably valuable runs for us.”
