Hosein and McKiernan put on 102 for the eighth wicket, with the former going on to make 84 as Derbyshire fell just five runs short of a crucial batting point at Aigburth.

Half-centuries from Alex Davies (86), Keaton Jennings (81) and George Balderson (56 not out) extended the hosts’ lead beyond 300, meaning Derbyshire will need a second mammoth chase of the campaign to earn a third victory.
