Derbyshire’s bowlers were on top throughout the second day of the pre-season friendly against Cardiff UCCE.
Ben Hutchinson (3-17) and Adam Sylvester (3-31) were the pick of the bowlers, while there were also wickets for Dustin Melton, Alex Hughes, Nils Priestley and Archie Harrison.
Jacques Banton (75) and Morgan Bevans (66) helped the visitors to a score of 258 all out, before Hughes (12 not out) and Mitch Wagstaff (seven not out) saw Derbyshire through to 20-1 at the end of the day, leading by 83.
Derbyshire declared on 321-6 overnight, with Harvey Hosein unbeaten on 89, and the hosts made a strong start with the ball.
Hutchinson made an early breakthrough, as Harrison Ward was brilliantly caught by Tom Wood in the fourth over, while Adam Sylvester, Dustin Melton and Alex Hughes all picked up wickets before the 20th over.
After lunch, Bevans and Harry Johnson (40) put on 66 for the fifth wicket, but it was the former’s contribution with Banton that really got the Cardiff innings going.
Priestley broke their 79-run partnership when he bowled Bevans, leaving Cardiff UCCE 206-7 early in the final session of the day. Banton, however, kept going until he was dismissed by Hutchinson for 75.
The visitors were eventually all out for 258, meaning that Tom Wood and Wagstaff returned to the crease with Derbyshire leading by 63 runs.
Wood fell for one before the endo of the day, but Hughes and Wagstaff guided the hosts to 20-1 at the close of play.
