Sam Conners found himself on a hat-trick in just his second over of the day, while the Cricket Derbyshire in partnership with the University of Derby graduate went on to take a third dismissal after lunch.
Durham ended the day 307-4, with David Bedingham unbeaten on 170, while Jack Burnham had scored 75 earlier in the day.
