Vitality Blast 2022: Two weeks away

There’s just two weeks to go until Vitality Blast cricket returns to Derbyshire, with seven blockbuster home clashes for the Falcons.

Aiming for a second Finals Day appearance in four years, Derbyshire embark on a new era of Twenty20 cricket under internationally-renowned coach, Mickey Arthur, beginning on Friday 27 May against Birmingham Bears.

Pakistan international, Shan Masood, has been in stellar form in red ball cricket already this season, with 713 runs from just six innings, but his T20 credentials should also have Falcons fans licking their lips ahead of the Vitality Blast!

Masood, who has a T20 century to his name, won the Pakistan Super League in 2021 and finished as a runner-up in 2022, while he is Multan Sultan’s all-time leading PSL run-scorer, with 1,082 from 33 innings.

Masood, coupled with the explosive and innovative batting of Wayne Madsen, Derbyshire’s all-time leading T20 run-scorer, Luis Reece and Leus du Plooy will be a match for any bowling attack, but the Falcons have more than enough tricks up their sleeve with the ball to be a threat.

George Scrimshaw enjoyed an impressive first season for Derbyshire in T20 cricket, claiming 14 wickets at an average of 16.85, and the tall quick will be joined by the experienced Suranga Lakmal, who has pedigree in the format, having won the 2021 Lanka Premier League with Jaffna Kings.

Scotland’s Mark Watt, who Arthur described as the ‘finger spinner of last year’s World Cup’ will also return to Derbyshire for this season’s Vitality Blast, having previously appeared in 2019.

Watt will be hoping to replicate his form at Queen’s Park during that stint, when he claimed 4-19 against Yorkshire in front of a packed-out Chesterfield crowd, More than 50% of tickets have already been sold for this year’s fixture on Saturday 18 June, so don’t delay if you want to experience the BRM Solicitors Chesterfield Festival of Cricket.

Can’t make it to Chestefield? We have six more huge fixtures at The Incora County Ground, including the dramatic East Midlands Derby against Notts Outlaws under the lights on Friday 3 June. Last year’s encounter went down to the final ball, but who will claim the local bragging rights in 2022?

The Falcons also host Birmingham Bears, Lancashire Lightning, Northants Steelbacks, Leicestershire Foxes and Durham Cricket, with some of the best county cricketers, and overseas stars, on show at Derby this summer.

Demand is expected to be high across all fixtures, as we welcome capacity crowds back for the first full season since 2019, so supporters are urged to buy early to avoid missing out.

For the first-time-ever, Derbyshire will be operating reserved seating in the Showcase Cinema de Lux Family Zone, meaning families can secure seats together at the heart of the family fun for the biggest matches at The Incora County Ground.
