Assistant Coach (Bowling Lead) Ajmal Shahzad has decided to leave the Club to pursue a new challenge.

Shahzad joined the Club in February 2021, after an illustrious playing career where he claimed 417 wickets and appeared for England across all three formats.

Initially brought to the Club by Dave Houghton, Shahzad has become a key part of the Derbyshire coaching setup for the last five seasons.

Head of Cricket, Mickey Arthur said: “Ajmal has done a great job over the past few seasons, but now he’s ready for the next stage of his coaching journey and we wish him all the best for the future.

“He leaves the Club with our best wishes and we look forward to seeing his further progression over the years to come, with our bowling unit in a much better place than when he arrived.”

Shahzad added: “I would like to sincerely thank everyone at the Club — players, staff, and supporters — for their trust, hard work, and commitment throughout my time here. It has been a pleasure to see the playing group develop year on year, and to watch individuals grow, mature, and perform both for Derbyshire and in opportunities beyond the Club.

“It has been a rewarding and memorable chapter in my coaching journey — highlighted by seeing players such as George Scrimshaw, Sam Conners, Harry Moore, and Pat Brown go on to represent England squads, and witnessing the continued development of bowlers like Zak Chappell and Ben Aitchison.

“I’ve been fortunate to work alongside some fantastic people, both on and off the field, and I leave with great memories, lasting friendships, and a deep sense of pride in what we’ve achieved together.

“I wish Derbyshire CCC and the players every success moving forward — and I will continue to follow their progress with great interest.”

Everyone at Derbyshire County Cricket Club thanks Ajmal for his efforts during his time with us and wish him the very best for the future.
