To mark Women’s History Month and National Careers Week 2026, Derbyshire County Cricket Club is launching a new series in partnership with Her Game Too Cricket to shine a spotlight on the women within the game
The purpose of this campaign is to showcase the careers that are available within our sport, highlight the work The Derbyshire Cricket Foundation do to create opportunities for women in cricket and emphasise the message that cricket is a game for everyone.
The first edition of “A Career in Cricket” follows the journey of Derbyshire County Cricket Club’s first XI scorer, Jane Hough.
Jane has risen through the pathways from second-team scorer at Ockbrook and Borrowash Cricket Club, to have scored all around the country at both domestic and international fixtures, as well as being an ever-present on matchdays at The Central Co-op County Ground.
She said, “I was taught how to score with coloured pens in a book, it was all pre- computers, and I absolutely fell in love with it.
“For me, it brought the game alive – I got to watch every single ball, I got to see the wickets, I got to see the catches, I got to see the fielding.
“I knew that the Association of Cricket Officials had a scorer’s pathway so I took myself off to Lord’s for a level 2 course. I then contacted the county scorer’s officer who organised for me to come down and watch a county championship match.
“I had never put together that what I did for fun for my club, somebody actually did professionally. It was this big dawning realisation of ‘oh my word, the thing that I love doing, some people are paid to do – how cool is that?’
“Then in 2023 I became the men’s first XI scorer here at Derbyshire.”
Back in 2017, Jane was appointed to the ICC Women’s World Cup, as one of the few female scorers in the game at that time. Speaking on her experiences at the World Cup, Jane said, “I was really lucky – that got me to places like Edgebaston and here and that was absolutely brilliant.
“I’m a great supporter of women’s cricket. I run the women’s cricket section at my club and I’m always pushing it within Ockbrook and Borrowash, so to be able to score for England Women, particularly here at my home ground, was absolutely amazing.”
Jane also shared her advice on how to pursue a career in scoring or officiating. She said, “go and find a local cricket club, they are crying out for scorers – we do not have enough in our local game.
“The ECB have recently launched their new scorer’s pathway – there’s an online course that will take about an hour and a half which will give people the absolute basics to be able to score.
“That can be followed up by an in-person course that we’re running here at Derbyshire where you can get practical skills, and then just go out there and have a go.
“You can find all those details on the Derbyshire Cricket Foundation website.”
