On Sunday 8 March, staff from the Derbyshire Cricket Foundation and Derbyshire County Cricket Club came together with members of Derby’s Muslim and wider community for our fourth joint Iftar event, with almost 100 people in attendance to open fast together at The Central Co-op County Ground.
Guests were welcomed by Derbyshire Chief Executive Officer, Ryan Duckett, followed by a discussion around the practice and meaning of Ramadan led by Imam Fazal E Muhammed gadri. The day’s fast was the broken with dates and water before the evening prayers were taken ahead of the main meal.
Derbyshire Cricket Foundation Community Development Manager, Mark Barber said: “Over four years of managing this event to have grown to almost 100 people demonstrates huge success in connecting with our local community. We were honoured to be able to host this as the first of many events celebrating the diversity of the Derby community. A huge thank you to everyone who attended, took part, and made the event such a resounding success.”
Derbyshire Chief Executive, Ryan Duckett, said: “It was a privilege to welcome so many members of the local Muslim community to The Central Co-op County Ground during the holy month of Ramadan, for what was the biggest Derbyshire Cricket Iftar event to date.
“We were delighted to have Shoaib [Bashir] and Yousaf [Bin Naeem] in attendance, joining a great many local community and political leaders to break fast and come together at this event. We are a Club, Foundation and venue for everyone and I would like to thank all of those in attendance, and those behind the scenes, for once again making this such a special occasion.”
