William Cavendish, Earl of Burlington, has been appointed President of Derbyshire County Cricket Club.
A lifelong follower of cricket and a passionate supporter of the game at both grassroots and professional levels, Lord Burlington joins his father, the Club’s Patron, His Grace the Duke of Devonshire KCVO CBE DL, in championing the continued growth and success of Derbyshire cricket.
Alongside his longstanding interest in sport, Lord Burlington is Chairman of the Devonshire Group, which controls the family’s business interests. He also chairs the Council of Management of Chatsworth House Trust, the charity responsible for the long-term preservation of the house, garden, woodlands and park. In addition, he has played an active role in public and civic life, serving as Chancellor of the University of Derby since 2018, and currently co-chairing the University’s Entrepreneurs’ Club. He was the High Sheriff of Derbyshire in 2019-20 and became a Deputy Lieutenant of the county in 2022.
In his role as President, Lord Burlington will act as an ambassador for the Club, supporting its ambitions on and off the field, and helping to strengthen its engagement with Members, supporters and the wider community.
Lord Burlington said: “I am truly honoured to take on the role of President of Derbyshire County Cricket Club. Cricket, with all its exquisite highs and lows, has always held a special place in my life, and I look forward to supporting the Club as it continues to grow, both in terms of performance and its importance within the local community.
“I would also like to wish the players, staff and supporters the very best for the season ahead. The dedication and passion shown by everyone connected with the Club is something to be proud of, and I hope it proves to be an exciting and successful campaign for all involved.”
Club Chair, Ian McFarlane, said: “We are delighted to welcome Lord Burlington as our new President. His deep connection to Derbyshire, combined with a passion for cricket and community engagement, makes him an excellent ambassador for the Club.”
