Steve Kirby believes Derbyshire’s strength in depth will give them an advantage throughout the 2020 season.
The majority of the squad have been working at The Pattonair County Ground since the turn of the year, with the fitness programme that was in place before Christmas now running alongside cricket practice.
Kirby has been encouraged by the progression of Derbyshire’s younger players over the winter, and they will play a greater role in supporting the more experienced players throughout the season.
“I’m really excited about this season, and the lads are too,” said Kirby.
“I know I say this every time, because I’m an optimist, but I’ve really got a good feeling that we can challenge for things, not just in the County Championship, but we are also going to go for the Twenty20 again.
“Our side is starting to become established. We now have the opportunity for some younger players to stamp their mark.
“Who knows who will stand up and be counted? The door is open for someone to come in and make an impact, that’s really exciting.
“I am really excited by Sam Conners and Dustin Melton, Michael Cohen will be giving it a good go as well. No to mention the likes of Ravi Rampaul, Tony Palladino and Luis Reece.
“Anuj Dal hasn’t even had a proper crack yet, but he is training so hard and the Members will see a lot more of him this year. Fynn Hudson-Prentice did well last year as well, so I think all bases are covered in our attack.”
Derbyshire have also added Australian internationals Ben McDermott and Sean Abbott ahead of the new campaign, and Kirby is excited to see what the latter will bring to an already strong bowling attack.
“Sean’s a fantastic bowler and he has got a great pedigree behind him,” he added.
“Not only has he got great pace, that will give us an extra edge, but he also has a very good economy rate which will bring another dimension to our attack, especially when the ball goes a bit softer and we need somebody to make something happen.
“We are so lucky to have him and it will be great for some of the younger bowlers to learn from working with him.”
