Loye: Derbyshire undone by Notts seamers

Assistant Coach (Batting Lead), Mal Loye, admits Derbyshire were undone by the standout performances of the Nottinghamshire pace attack in suffering a first defeat of the summer.

The assessment came after Derbyshire were bowled out for 159 on the morning of Day Three, with England international Stuart Broad claiming 4-37 and Luke Fletcher adding 2-32 to his first innings five-for in a performance which was too good for the hosts in both innings.

“It was a great first-class wicket for both batting and bowling. If you got it right with the ball you got your rewards and they clearly did throughout the game,” said Loye.

“When you’ve got a class act in Broad and Fletcher and the overseas [Dane] Paterson and they backed up their class on a good wicket.

“We won the toss and I thought it was the right decision to bowl first. That was proven early on, but we didn’t get the ball in the right areas for a prolonged period of time and we were always playing catch-up.”

Australia international, Billy Stanlake, is set to join-up with the Derbyshire squad this week and could feature in Second XI cricket prior to the next round of LV= County Championship fixtures. Loye hopes his experience will balance out a youthful seam attack.

“He’s raring to go and he’ll be in the nets next week here at Derby in preparation,” said Loye. “He’s a huge addition for our bowling attack. There’s been no change in that bowling attack really, so the addition of Stanlake will be welcomed.

“After a rest, one or two players will play in the Second XI, and will there be changes, I don’t know. It’ll be how the players turn up in training and push for a place individually.”

Derbyshire’s next fixture in this season’s LV= County Championship will see a trip to Chelmsford to face Essex, starting on Thursday 13 May.
