20 years on from what is regarded one of the best matches of cricket ever to take place, Club Media spoke to Head of Cricket, Mickey Arthur, about his recollections of the day.
Arthur was in charge of South Africa back in 2006 as his side faced Australia in the fifth match of the ODI series. Bowling first, South Africa’s attack was taken apart by Ricky Ponting (164) and Michael Hussey (81), as Australia racked up 434-4 off their 50 overs – a record ODI score at the time.
South Africa only had one option when their batting innings commenced – try and score as quickly as possible during the powerplay. Unfortunately, Boeta Dippenaar was bowled only eight balls into the 2nd innings, allowing Herschelle Gibbs to stride to the crease at three.
What followed was one of the greatest ODI innings of all time – and a run chase that would live long in the memory.
Mickey still remembers the day like it was yesterday, providing insight into what that famous day was like.
