Player replacements to be trialled in 2026 County Championship

On-field replacements for injuries, illness or significant life events will be trialled during the 2026 Rothesay County Championship season.

This trial, which will only apply to County Championship fixtures, will now allow players to be replaced with a fully participating like-for-like substitute in the event of injury, illness or significant life events.

Players replaced due to injury or illness will be unable to feature in any first team fixture for eight days after being substituted, while significant life events carry no suspension period. Players cannot return to the game once replaced.

Protocols remain in place for concussion substitutions, which apply to all formats.
