Derbyshire have named a 14-player squad for the opening Rothesay County Championship game of the season against Worcestershire, starting at The Central Co-op County Ground tomorrow (11am).

New signings, Mohammad Abbas, Shoaib Bashir and Matt Montgomery could all be in line to make first-class debuts for Derbyshire, while Caleb Jewell returns to the Club from Australia, having scored more runs than any other player in county cricket last summer.

Luis Reece, who was Division Two’s leading wicket-taker last season, will hope to form an effective new ball partnership with Abbas, while Zak Chappell, Ben Aitchison and Anuj Dal all picked up wickets across the pre-season friendlies at Leicester and Derby.

Captain Wayne Madsen misses out as he continues his rehabilitation from a should injury sustained at the ICC T20 World Cup with Italy. The batter is working closely with the Club’s Medical Team as he approaches a return to fitness.

The Opposition

After suffering relegation from Division One last summer, Worcestershire will be hoping to bounce back at the first time of asking in 2026.

Tom Taylor continued his stellar form from last season (58 wickets at 22.87, most in Division One) throughout pre-season, claiming 6-43 against Warwickshire in the Pears’ final warm-up fixture.

The evergreen Jake Libby will play a key role with the bat once again this season, while the arrival of Beyers Swanepoel will provide an injection of energy with bat and ball.
