Derbyshire sign Randell for Championship run-in

Derbyshire have signed seamer, Brett Randell, for the remainder of the Rothesay County Championship season.  

Randell, 31, has claimed more than 100 first-class wickets in New Zealand domestic cricket at an average of 25.38, with best figures of 7-25, which came against Northern Districts in March of this year.

He made international headlines earlier this year when he became the first bowler in the history of first-class cricket to claim five wickets in as many balls.

The seamer will replace Muhammad Abbas, who is away on international duty with Pakistan, and provides experience and depth to the bowling attack for the final six games of the campaign.

Head of Cricket, Mickey Arthur, said: “We needed to add depth to our seam attack for the run-in, with the games coming thick and fast towards the end of the season.

“Muhammad is away with Pakistan, Zak Chappell is building his fitness after injury so it would be a lot to ask him to play all six, while Harry Moore, Rory Haydon and Pat Brown are out for the season, so it was crucial we got in a quality bowler to help take some of the load off the players we have available.

“Brett has that quality, he’s an experienced seamer who will complement our group really nicely as we challenge for promotion in the final six games.”

Randell added: “I’m looking forward to returning to county cricket with Derbyshire, Mickey is an outstanding coach and someone I’m eager to learn from.

“Derbyshire are in a good position in the division and I’m excited to hopefully help them win some games and challenge for success come the end of the season.”
