Match Preview: Yorkshire (A)

Derbyshire face Yorkshire for the first time in a List A game since 2022 when they travel to Scarborough for the sixth game in the Metro Bank One Day Cup group stage.

There have been 71 scheduled one day matches between these two counties who first met in the Player’s County League at Bramall Lane, Sheffield in 1969.

Derbyshire have won 18 games to Yorkshire’s 42 with two ties, five No Results and four Abandoned.

The tied games were at Derby in 2008 and Headingley in 2019.

This will be the fifth time the two sides have met in this form of the game at Scarborough, the last occasion being in 2014 when the home side won by 10 wickets, a crushing defeat not helped when Mark Footitt was removed from the attack after delivering 4.5 overs in Yorkshire innings. Umpires Mark Benson and Peter Hartley banned him after a spate of intimidatory bowling to Adam Lyth and Alex Lees.

In the previous four matches at North Marine Road, Derbyshire won once, in 2005, while Yorkshire won in 1973 and 2014 with the other game abandoned without a ball being bowled in 1985.

Derbyshire’s highest score in these fixtures is 334 for eight at Headingley in 2017; a spirited reply to Yorkshire’s 349 for seven which is their highest innings total.

Derbyshire have only won three one day games by a margin of ten wickets, the most recent of which came in 1986 when they bowled Yorkshire out for 132 at Chesterfield in a John Player Special League game before Kim Barnett and Alan Hill knocked off the runs inside 29 overs.

The tied game at Headingley in 2019 saw Billy Godleman score his third one day hundred in just six days off a mere 59 balls, at the time the fastest List A hundred for Derbyshire, but since beaten by Tom Wood’s 55-ball effort against Nottinghamshire in 2021.

Derbyshire players have recorded seven individual hundreds against Yorkshire, with Chris Adams, Barnett, Martin Guptill, Wayne Madsen, Ben Slater and Chris Taylor all reaching three figures in addition to Godleman.

Madsen’s 112 at Leeds in 2017 is the highest of them all.

Taylor’s hundred came on his debut, 100 at Headingley in 2006.

There have been nine century partnerships for Derbyshire in these games with the 158 added for the third wicket at Derby in 1997 by Chris Adams and Vince Clarke at the top of the list.

Three Derbyshire bowlers have taken five wickets in an innings; Colin Tunnicliffe recorded figures of five for 24 at Derby in 1981, Ravi Rampaul took five for 48 on the same ground in 2018 and Sam Conners five for 28 at Chesterfield in 2022.

For Yorkshire, there have been eight individual hundreds with Darren Lehmann scoring two, in 1998 at Derby and in 2001 at Leeds, although the highest individual score of 140 was made by Peter Handscomb at Headingley in 2017.

Yorkshire’s bowlers have produced four five wicket hauls with the best performance of six for 32 coming from Steve Patterson at Headingley in 2010.

Paul Jarvis took a hat trick for Yorkshire at Derby in 1982 when Kim Barnett, Bill Fowler and Bernie Maher were all bowled in a game in which Ray Illingworth, at the time Yorkshire’s Cricket Manager, appeared for the visitors and captained the side at the age of 50. By contrast, Jarvis was aged just 16.
