Matthew Waite’s superb 73* drove Worcestershire in front against Derbyshire as the home side opened up a 329-run lead at New Road on the second day of the final Division Two Rothesay County Championship clash of the summer, closing 203-9.
The Pears were forced to rebuild from 88-7 after Muhammad Abbas (4-63) wreaked havoc with the hosts and threw the visitors a lifeline on another enterprising start to the day.
Still ahead in the match, Waite hit back and cashed in having been dropped twice on single figures in a stand of 51 with Tom Taylor that set the hosts back on course, pushing the Worcestershire lead past 200.
The all-rounder cut loose in the evening session to frustrate Derbyshire, but saw his charge cut short when bad light stopped play shortly before 5pm with his side in control of the match.
Abbas and Luis Reece traded wickets in consecutive overs early on day two to safely remove nightwatchers Ben Allison and Fateh Singh, and the Pakistan International capped a profitable first hour when he pinned Jake Libby LBW for 13 as the visitors surged into life.
A lengthy delay for bad light saw an early lunch taken, but the away side had Nick Potts to thank for a double wicket burst upon the resumption that saw both Dan Lategan (11) and Rehaan Edavalath (16) caught behind by Brooke Guest as the Pears slumped to 59-5.
The visitors continued to wrestle back the momentum, with the impressive Reece backing up Abbas when the pair exchanged two wickets in quick succession to stifle Adam Hose and Brett D’Oliveira, shortly after the host’s lead had surpassed 200.
Abbas saw Matthew Waite dropped twice at second slip as the seamer chased a second fifer of the match, but did not have to wait long for a fourth of the innings when he accounted for Henry Cullen, caught behind.
Despite the flurry of wickets throughout the day, the Pears continued to build on their first innings lead, with a plucky stand of 29 between Waite and Tom Taylor guiding Worcestershire to 137-8 at Tea.
Determined to spark a breakthrough, even a marathon spell of 20 overs straight through from Abbas either side of the break failed to produce an opening for the away side.
Leading by 263 runs upon resumption, the partnership of 51 was broken after an excellent piece of fielding from Yousaf Bin Naeem ran Taylor out for 18, shortly before Waite was caught at long-leg on 48, only to be handed a reprieve when Potts had been found guilty of overstepping.
Waite batted on in the process of registering a gritty 97-ball-50, passing the milestone for the sixth time in Division Two this summer as he continued to build Worcestershire’s lead, and a late attacking blitz from the all-rounder saw the home side charge past 200 and take their lead up to 329, with Ben Gibbon’s handy 21* chipping in.
With 30 overs left in the day, the skies darkened once again and the players were removed from the field with the Pears 203-9, in a commanding position heading into the third day.
Derbyshire’s Luis Reece said: “We are massively behind in the game but it provides us with opportunities.
“Ultimately, we haven’t done the basic facets of the game and we are very far behind in the match.
“Its not the way we wanted to finish the season but there is a chance for someone to make a big score with the bat and change the course of the game.
“I thought the way we bowled actually meant we could have been chasing 230/240 and that would have felt really achievable, whereas now it feels a bit less likely, even though we can’t look back now and say that is where we lost the game.”
